He actually made his boxing debut on the undercard of a benefit card for striking railroad workers in Paducah, Kentucky. Herring later had a stint in the army during WW1, where he reportedly won 35 boxing matches while serving.
For the next decade, Red fought in a staggering 279 professional matches and earned two world titles. His career record after retiring in 1930 stood at 189(80 KOs)-44-43 with 1 no contest.
Davey Moore
Another one of the best boxers from Kentucky was former champion Davey Moore. Davey resided in Ohio, but he was born in Lexington, Kentucky.
He had a ten year boxing career from 1953 to 1963 and won the featherweight title from Hogan Bassey in 1959. Moore retained the belts all the way until his last fight against Sugar Ramos in 1963.
Tragically, Moore died from injuries sustained from the fight. His fight record stood at 59-7-1 with 1 no contest.
