Billy Joe Saunders Believes Canelo-Yildirim Was Pretty Embarrassing
Billy Joe Saunders wasn’t a fan of Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildirim.
Entering the fight, many pundits thought it would be a walkover win over the Mexican. He was already booked to face Saunders in May barring he got the job done. Alvarez ended up getting his hand raised as he won in three-rounds, but for Saunders, he thinks it was “pretty embarrassing.”
Although Billy Joe Saunders knows his last performance against Martin Murray would beat Canelo Alvarez, he says he can’t even look at Alvarez’s last fight. He believes it was an easy paycheque for the Mexican.
“You’re only as good as your last performance,” Saunders said “The Ak & Barak Show,” which streams weekdays on DAZN and SiriusXM (via boxingscene). “My last performance was Martin Murray. Was that performance good enough to beat Canelo Alvarez? Probably not. Definitely not. You know, we couldn’t go too much on Alvarez’s last performance because this fella just went in there and he jacked [around] for three rounds. You know, it was a bit embarrassing, to be honest with you. So, I don’t embarrass myself about money. I wouldn’t do that.”
Although it wasn’t the most competitive fight, the result did secure the May 8 fight between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders. It’s a very intriguing matchup as many think Saunders could be the one to end the Mexican’s reign. For the Brit, he is just glad Alvarez escaped his last fight without an injury and they two can fight.
“He got the job done,” Saunders said, “no injuries – that’s the main thing – against a bum, and we move on to the 8th.”
Alvarez and Saunders will fight for Alvarez’s WBA and WBC and Saunders’ WBO 168-pound championships May 8. The venue will either be the Raiders stadium in Las Vegas or the Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
