Billy Joe Saunders Eyes Liam Smith Fight, Smith Responds
Billy Joe Saunders is interested in fighting Liam Smith next time out.
Saunders has begun training and is eyeing a return as he has not fought since his stoppage loss to Canelo Alvarez as he suffered multiple fractures to his eye socket in the May 2021 fight.
Now, with Saunders looking to get back into the ring, he believes Liam Smith makes sense as his return fight.
“If they said ‘do you want to face anyone’ I’d rather face Liam Smith first fight back,” Saunders told iFL TV. “Of course, he’s won. You gotta give him the credit. Forget about the biggest fight. Sometimes, it’s all right to just grab the money, but thank god I’m okay. I can feed my family…
“It’s about, for me, to get in the ring with somebody who’s obviously going to bring something to the table where I question myself and think I’ve got to be on my game,” Saunders added. “Liam Smith, I got to be on my game. Eubank, looking at that, have I got to be on my game? No. You haven’t got to be on your game.”
After the interview of Billy Joe Saunders being interested in fighting Liam Smith, Smith took to social media to respond to the callout and is interested in making it happen.
“You know me, Billy, talk to me,” Smith responded on social media. “I’m open to anything. What weight [are] we talking?”
Billy Joe Saunders (30-1) suffered an eighth-round stoppage loss to Canelo Alvarez back in 2021 and before that, he beat Martin Murray by decision. In his career, he holds notable wins over David Lemieux, Andy Lee, Shefat Isufi, and Willie Monroe Jr. among others.
Liam Smith (33-3-1) is riding a four-fight winning streak and is coming off a TKO win over Chris Eubank Jr. in January.
