Bob Arum Believes George Kambosos Jr. Should Take A Tune-Up Fight Instead Of Devin Haney Rematch

Bob Arum

Bob Arum doesn’t think Georges Kambosos Jr. should take an immediate rematch against Devin Haney.

Kambosos Jr. lost his lightweight titles to Haney in his first chance to defend his belts in Australia. Unfortnately, Haney controlled the fight and won a clear-cut decision, although Kambosos Jr. disagreed with the call.

Although he lost and did so rather one-sidedly, Kambosos Jr. triggered his immediate rematch clause as he said he knows he can beat Devin Haney. The fight will happen again in Australia and must take place before Christmas but for Bob Arum, he doesn’t think Kambosos Jr. should’ve triggered the rematch clause and instead he should’ve taken a tune-up fight.

“There is a contract for him (Haney) to fight Kambosos again in a rematch,” Arum said. “Again, when sensible people have a contract and there is another way to go, you might be able to do that. In other words, nobody is talking about breaching a contract, but it might be worthwhile for Kambosos to take another fight as a tune-up fight and then fight the winner of Haney and who Haney would be fighting. All that would be possible… But is there a contract for a rematch?” Arum said. “Absolutely. And knowing the Haneys and what honorable people they are, they are not going to breach that contract.”

Although Bob Arum doesn’t think George Kambosos Jr. has much of a chance against Devin Haney, the Australian still gets another big payday of fighting for the title, and does so at home. But, if he loses again, it seems unlikely he will get another title shot for the time being, especially if Haney remains the champ so he is in a unique position.

Do you agree with Bob Arum that George Kambosos Jr. should take a tune-up fight instead of Devin Haney rematch?
