Boxing Could Be Dropped From Olympics, IOC President Reveals
Boxing may no longer be an Olympic sport.
IOC President, Thomas Bach dropped a bombshell on Thursday as he revealed boxing, along with other sports may be dropped from the Olympics. According to Bach, boxing may be canned by 2028 if significant changes are not made to the program.
“Aiba (The International Boxing Association) must demonstrate that it has successfully addressed the ongoing concerns around its governance, financial transparency and sustainability and the integrity of its refereeing and judging processes,” Bach said about boxing in the Olympics.
Part of the reason why boxing may be removed from the Olympics is due to youth sports like skateboarding and surfing gaining a ton of popularity. Boxing, meanwhile, has not gained the interest of many fans despite the fact many Olympians go on to have massively successful boxing careers.
“The proposed inclusion of these youth-focused sports is based on the significant contribution to the overall success of the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020, their commitment to innovation and the partnership expressed by LA 28,” Bach said. “We are also recognising the deep roots each of these three sports have in LA and in California.”
In boxing, the likes of Anthony Joshua, Vasyl Lomachenko, Oscar De La Hoya, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Oleksandr Usyk, Lennox Lewis, Claressa Shields, and Katie Taylor among countless others have won Olympic gold medals. All of them went on to be some of the best boxers and become world champions.
