Caleb Plant Doesn’t Think Trevor McCumby Believes In Himself
Caleb Plant believes Trevor McCumby doesn’t believe in himself which is why he took so long to take a step up.
McCumby is 31 years old and is 28-0 as a pro, but hasn’t fought any big names. That will change on Sept. 14 when he faces Plant on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga, in a bout that Plant is a -1400 favorite.
With this being the first true test for McCumby, Plant believes that shows he doesn’t believe in himself as he would have stepped up in competition much sooner.
“This is his shot,” Plant said. “He’s a 31-year-old prospect. If he believed in his skills and was confident, why is he waiting this long to step up?… I did that with 17 fights, fighting Jose Uzcategui, because I was confident in my skills. [McCumby] can talk all he wants, but actions speak louder than words. If he truly believed in himself, he wouldn’t have waited this long to step up.”
Caleb Plant is coming off a decision loss to David Benavidez and is 22-2 as a pro. Although Trevor McCumby is a step down in competition, he says he isn’t looking past the undefeated boxer as he knows he has to take him seriously.
“I haven’t looked past this fight,” Plant said. “Too many fighters talk about their next fight and then lose the one in front of them. I don’t want to be that fighter.”
Plant has talked about wanting to rematch Alvarez and if he makes a statement against McCumby he could have a case for that.
Before the loss to Benavidez, Caleb Plant had a KO over Anthony Dirrell after losing to Alvarez by TKO. Plant is the former IBF middleweight champion and has notable wins over Caleb Traux, Mike Lee, Vincent Feigenbutz, and Jose Uzcategui.
