Caleb Plant May Face New Opponent After Trevor McCumby Suffers A Cut
Caleb Plant may not be fighting Trevor McCumby as reported.
Plant was expected to box McCumby on August 17 in Orlando. It was an intriguing matchup, but McCumby has suffered a serious cut and the fight may now be off, according to BoxingScene.
“There was never an official announcement, so there is no new date,” a PBC source told BoxingScene. “We’ll announce Plant’s fight in the coming days, and it’s possibly going to be an entirely new opponent given the severity of McCumby’s cut.”
As the outlet reported, Plant vs. McCumby was never officially announced, despite Plant saying that would happen. Instead, with the fight never officially announced a new opponent will likely be found for Plant for the August 17 date, but it’s unclear who the new opponent will be.
The news is also disappointing for McCumby as he was set to get a big-time fight against Plant.
“Yes, we’re looking at August right now, so just kind of waiting for an announcement but we will be back in August,” said McCumby. “The fight is a pretty high possibility. Caleb is a household name and it will definitely move me up in the rankings. Hopefully, a win will get me a title eliminator and then I get a shot after that one…
“I have a lot of punching power. As you can see from my last fight, I have a lot of gas. I feel pretty certain Caleb is going to take the challenge. It’s a great opportunity and I’m very appreciative. It’s finally time where hopefully I can get a shot.”
Caleb Plant is 22-2 as a pro and coming off a decision loss to David Benavidez as he’s 1-2 in his last three as he beat Anthony Dirrell by KO after being stopped by Canelo Alvarez. He’s the former IBF super middleweight champion.
