Callum Smith Believes He’ll Be Much Better At 175lbs, Eyes Rematch With Canelo Alvarez
Callum Smith knows he will be a better boxer at 175lbs.
The former super middleweight world champion is set to return for the first time since his loss to Canelo Alvarez last December. He’ll be on the Joshua vs. Usyk undercard at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Yet, the big decision after the fight for Smith was to move up in weight as he says he struggled with making weight.
Now that Callum Smith is moving up in weight, he says he would be open to rematching Alvarez at 175lbs if the Mexican wants the bout.
“I do believe I’m good enough to be a two-weight world champion. I think I can do it,” Smith told Boxing Social (via Boxingscene). “I’d love a rematch [with Canelo]. He beat me and beat me well, no excuses, but I do believe we’ll see a better version of me at 175.
“That’s my only regret on the fight that we never saw the best version of me in with him. I didn’t perform on the night, and that’s that. That’s on me,” Smith continued. “If I were offered the fight at 175, I’d jump at it if I was a world champion. I’m not going to hold my breath on that one. I do believe he’ll move up at some point, and I think he’ll go wherever he wants to. Yeah, I think we’ll see a better version of me at 175. I think we’ll see a better version of him at 175, and you’ll definitely see a better version of me.”
Whether or not Smith will ever get the chance to rematch Alvarez is uncertain. However, he is just focused on getting back into the win column when he faces Lenin Castillo. Should he win, perhaps he does get a title shot and become a champion again.
