Callum Smith Is Devastated With Loss To Canelo Alvarez
Callum Smith has taken his first loss as a professional, losing both his WBA (Super) and The Ring super-middleweight titles.
Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez had his hand raised, in an unanimous decision victory after a 12-round masterclass from Canelo.
Although he walked away without his belts, Smith was graceful in defeat, giving credit to Canelo’s performance.
“I’m devastated, I came to win. No excuses, he was very good,” Smith said.
“I don’t feel dominant late on in fights, It could have been a better version of me tonight. He was the better man.”
Becoming the unified super middleweight champion, Canelo showed exactly why he is the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
Canelo claims his eyes are set on wanting all of the belts at 168 pounds.
This would mean fights with both IBF titleholder Caleb Plant and WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders.
With plenty of options ahead for him, talks about a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin (GGG) still looms large.
When asked about the potential third fight with GGG post-fight, Canelo smiled and the crowd inside the venue cheered.
“I don’t run from nobody. I fight against the best,” Canelo said.
“If (GGG) wants to fight, I’ll take it. I feel more mature, I feel better.”
As for Smith, he hints at a potential move to light heavyweight moving forward, but wants to spend some time with family, before confirming any plans.
“I need to go and spend time with family and decide what is next for me next year,” Smith said.
