Canelo Alvarez And Callum Smith’s Faceoff Shows Massive Size Difference
Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith had their faceoff ahead of their title fight on Saturday and they had a massive size difference.
Alvarez is listed at 5’9″ with a 70.5″ reach while Smith is 6’3″ with a 78″ reach and it was noticeable.
Getting inside will be key for Alvarez to win this fight. However, he is used to fighting bigger men as his last fight, he took on Sergey Kovalev for the light heavyweight titles and had success.
The size difference is something Smith believes will lead to his success as he thinks regardless of skill, he is just too big for Alvarez.
“In my opinion, no, he’s not a super middleweight,” Smith told ESPN. “Yes, he’s been there before, fought Kovalev, but if you look at the champions at super middleweight, they are all big lads. There’s only so much size your ability can make up for.
“We saw it with [Vasiliy] Lomachenko [against Teofimo Lopez]. I believe that will be the case for Canelo against me, I will be too big for him. But I’m not just a big lump, I’ve got skills and ability, too; I’ve shown I belong at a world level. If I can use the size and ability, I’ve got the beating of Canelo at 168 pounds.”
Canelo Alvarez enters this fight with a record of 53-1-2 with his lone loss coming to Floyd Mayweather. If he can beat Smith and GGG wins on Friday, the trilogy could happen in 2021.
Callum Smith, meanwhile, is 27-0 and is a legit test for Alvarez. The Englishman is coming off a decision win over John Ryder last November. If he wins, it would be a big upset but he has already warned everyone that you shouldn’t be surprised if he pulls off the upset.
Do you think the size difference will have a big impact on that fight? And, who do you see winning, Canelo Alvarez or Callum Smith?
