Canelo Alvarez And Callum Smith Both Agree To December 19 Bout

It appears we will finally get the return of multiple-division world champion Canelo Alvarez, as he and WBA (Super) and The Ring Super-Middleweight Champion Callum Smith have both verbally agreed to face one another next month.

According to Michael Benson, the bout is expected to take place at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, on December 19.

There were rumors of Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2) fighting on the same said night, but against IBF Super-Middleweight Champion Caleb Plant (27-0), rather than Callum Smith (20-0).

Honestly, this is a better fight. Alvarez is now facing someone with half as many fights as himself, rather than a third as many, and Smith is a multiple-time champion that’s had loads of fights scheduled for 12 rounds.

Plant on the other hand just won his belt in January 2019, and has defended it twice thus far into his career. However, Plant has only been scheduled for four 12-round bouts in his career, while Smith has had ten.

Both Alvarez and Smith had relatively short amateur careers as well. Don’t get it twisted, they both had a lot of fights before turning professional, just not as many as a lot of top boxers today.

Alvarez went 44-2 as an amateur, and Smith went 68-18 as an amateur. Both of these talents are still just 30-years-old as well. In their professional careers, 36 of Alvarez’ 53 wins come via knockout with 17 decisions, while of Smith’s 27 wins, 19 come via knockout with 8 decisions.

The real kicker in this fight, what really jumps off the page when looking at them is their frames. Smith stands 6’3” with a 78” reach, while Alvarez stands 5’9” with a 70.5” reach. That makes things very interesting.

Plant also would’ve been the taller man, but by four inches rather than six, and he would’ve only had a three-and-a-half inch reach advantage, rather than almost seven. Alvarez is going to have to figure that out along the way, and it’s not at all an easy thing to do.

Generally speaking though, he is the superior boxer. This is going to be a good one! This fight will take place at super-middleweight (168 lbs), and we only have five weeks to wait!
