Canelo Alvarez Eyes Fight Against Artur Beterbiev

Canelo Alvarez hopes to fight Artur Beterbiev.

Alvarez is reportedly in talks to fight Caleb Plant later this year. If he is to win, Alvarez would’ve cleaned out the 168lb division and the four belts that come with it. The goal would then to move back up to light heavyweight where he wants to fight Beterbiev who has 16 straight KO’s.

“Canelo Alvarez is the absolute pound-for-pound king,” Hearn said to Little Giant Boxing. “He has the right to fight whoever he wants. But, the good news is, he is fighting champion after champion after champion. So you don’t have to worry about Saul, he’ll fight anyone. Maybe after this he will go to light heavyweight and he may fight Beterbiev and he might fight Bivol. He doesn’t care.”

Regardless, the plan for Alvarez is to face Plant next in what would be a highly-anticipated fight. The date is uncertain, but Hearn did say September would be ideal.

“That’s the decision for Saul ultimately,” he said of the planned negotiations on the DAZN Boxing Show. What my job ultimately is, along with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, is to make an offer to Caleb Plant, to make that fight a discussion. It’s, ‘Let’s have a discussion about the numbers that are in place for both fighters.’ We will make an offer to Caleb Plant through the PBC to make that fight for September. I expect a reciprocal offer for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to do that fight on Fox.

“What I’m very concerned about at the moment is the run of pay-per-view fights that are up and coming,” Hearn continued. “I believe that the way pay-per-view is going, the numbers are going to start getting affected by the saturation of pay-per-view in the marketplace. I’m very concerned about pay-per-view numbers in general. I’m saying, let’s look at the offers. Where Canelo Alvarez is comfortable is taking the fight, we will do it. That’s the fight we want, we hope Caleb feels the same, I think he does.”
