Canelo Alvarez Eyes Fight In Mexico on May 6 Against John Ryder, Reveals Eddie Hearn
Canelo Alvarez is planning to return on May 6 according to Eddie Hearn.
Hearn – who is the promoter of Alvarez – says the plan right now is to have Alvarez return in May and the hope is the event will be in Mexico.
“Canelo really wants to fight in Mexico,” Hearn said to BoxingScene. “Again, every time you make that move you have to unfortunately take it on the chin that you’re gonna make a lot less money. But again, he’s doing OK. And he’ll still make a lot of money to fight in Mexico. I think he wants to take the fight to the people, and Ryder could be in the right mix for that.”
As of right now, the event has not been finalized, or the location. But, according to Eddie Hearn, Canelo Alvarez’s return will be on May 6 likely against John Ryder and will take place in either Mexico or USA.
“I think the fight will be in the United States or in Mexico,” Hearn said. “And I think it’ll be John Ryder. You know, he’s the mandatory. It’s not confirmed, but you know, I feel like that will be the next fight.”
Canelo Alvarez (58-2-2) is coming off a decision win over Gennady Golovkin in the trilogy match to return to the win column after losing to Dmitry Bivol. Prior to that, the Mexican was on a lengthy winning streak with notable wins over Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Daniel Jacobs, Rocky Fielding, and Sergey Kovalev among others.
John Ryder (32-5) is on a four-fight winning streak and is coming off a stoppage win over Zach Parker to win the vacant WBO interim super middleweight title. Also on the win streak, he has wins over Jacobs, Joszef Jurko and Mike Guy.
