Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin Discuss Trilogy Fight
Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will finally have their trilogy match this September.
Alvarez and Golovkin are set to meet on September 17 in Las Vegas as the Mexican defends his WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles. The two first met on September 16 2017 when they fought to a draw and had their rematch on September 15, 2018 when Alvarez edged out a decision and even though Alvarez lost his last fight and could’ve gotten the rematch with Bivol he says the trilogy needed to happen.
“We already had that contract [with Gennadiy Golovkin], that agreement, so we have to continue what we started, and I think those are the two biggest fights in boxing, the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol,” Alvarez said Monday at his golf invitational in Naucalpan, Mexico (via ESPN). “Unfortunately, we lost, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try again. The important thing here is perseverance and we’re going to do it again. What is certain is that we are going to return in September.”
Golovkin, meanwhile, believes he already won the first two fights so beating Alvarez doesn’t mean a whole lot too him.
“I am comfortable knowing I won those fights,” Golovkin told ESPN in March. “I do not look back at the decisions. … I thought I won the first two, so winning the third one would be the same to me.”
However, Canelo Alvarez says this fight is personal to him after all the trash talk Golovkin has said which is why he’s so eager for this to happen.
“[Golovkin] always say something about me; he always talking about me. That’s why [it’s personal].”
