Canelo Alvarez expected to fight Jaime Munguia in May title clash amid PBC split

Boxing supremo, Canelo Alvarez has been linked with a stunning May championship fight with compatriot puncher, Jaime Munguia in his next outing inside the squared circle, amid confirmation of the Guadalajara native’s split from promoter, PBC and Al Haymon. 

Canelo, 33, the current WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO super middleweight champion, most recently featured in a high-profile main event fight with Jermell Charlo back in September of last year in Las Vegas, landing a one-sided unanimous decision win over the Lafayette striker.

And as for Munguia, the Tijuana striker improved his professional record to a mean 43-0 back in January, doing what his compatriot couldn’t and stopped John Ryder with a blistering TKO for a WBC silver super middleweight title retention. 

Canelo Alvarez linked with May title fight return

Long-linked with a title pairing against his elder, Munguia may land himself a stunning Las Vegas matchup with veteran global superstar, Canelo Alvarez this May – with reports revealing the latter is in line to fight either the former, or Puerto Rico rival, Edgar Berlanga in ‘Sin City’.

Currently in the midst of an impressive three-fight winning run since suffering a decision loss to European star, Dmitry Bivol in an unsuccessful light heavyweight title charge, Canelo Alvarez has taken wins over three-time rival, Gennady Golovkin, as well as the above-mentioned, Ryder, and the previously Charlo as recently as September. 

Munguia, 27, on the other hand, represents a stunning new-breed of striker from Mexico, turning in a WBC light middleweight title win over Sadam Ali back in 2018, improving him to 29-0 as a professional. 

And in the time since, the Tijuana native has turned in other notable victories over the likes of Liam Smith, Jimmy Smith, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, to go with triumphs against Irish championship challengers, Gary O’Sullivan, and Dennis Hogan. A professional since 2013, Munguia has landed an impressive 34 knockout victories from a total 43 career successes to boot.
