Canelo Alvarez Preparing For May Return Following Wrist Surgery
Canelo Alvarez is planning to make his return to the ring in May.
After Alvarez defeated Gennady Golovkin by decision in the trilogy, he announced he would be going under the knife to get surgery on his wrist. At the time, he expected to be out for quite some time, but now he appears to be ahead of schedule and is looking to return in May.
“My scars are already closed. I’m doing my therapy very well, so I think it won’t stop me so much. My fights are always in May or September. I think I’ll be ready for May again,” Alvarez told bet365. “I think so [to fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend in May]. At the beginning the doctor had told me that I had to spend four weeks with the cast without moving it after the surgery, when he came in and saw inside everything I had and what he did to me, he said that it was better than we expected, that it should be only seven days with the cast, then remove the stitches and start the rehabilitation, right now I’ve been two weeks.”
With Alvarez being able to fight in May, who he will be fighting will likely be figured out very soon. He has been adamant to get the rematch with Dmitry Bivol after the Russian beat Alvarez by decision earlier this year.
Canelo Alvarez (58-2-2) returned to the win column with a decision win over Golovkin in September after dropping a decision to Bivol in May. The Mexican defended his WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF, and The Ring super middleweight titles with the win over GGG. In his career, he also holds notable wins over Billy Joe Saunders, Caleb Plant, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Amir Khan, and Sergey Kovalev while his other loss was to Floyd Mayweather.
