Canelo Alvarez Reveals His Brother Was Kidnapped In 2018, Negotiated His Return Just Days Before Rocky Fielding Fight
Canelo Alvarez put on a dominant performance against Rocky Fielding, but just days before the fight, his brother was kidnapped in Mexico and he negotiated his return.
According to Alvarez, he says he was the one negotiating with the kidnapers to make sure his brother got him safe.
“Over the phone I negotiated all the….I negotiated everything for his release,” Alvarez said in a recent interview (via Sportskeeda). “For three days I negotiated with those A**holes so that they would let him go. Three days. And after I negotiated I was still thinking, imagine if this had been my daughter, my mother, my father. For me it would have been even more difficult.”
Alvarez says he was negotiating his brothers safe release all during fight week when he was set to face Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden. It was a tough time for the Mexican but he should no signs of anything being wrong as he dominated Fielding and got a TKO win.
“And on top of that I had to fight on Saturday, and a thousand interviews and everything, no one knew anything. And that’s what I’m getting at, everybody thinks, wow, you know, they see me up there and say, ‘Wow, it’s very easy’. But nothing is easy in this life, everything is difficult,” Alvarez added.
According to Alvarez, he says that very reason is why he doesn’t live in Mexico anymore as it’s not safe for him.
“This is why I’m not here in Mexico much anymore, because it’s not safe,” Alvarez said.
Canelo Alvarez is set to return to the ring on May 8 against Billy Joe Saunders in a highly anticipated bout.
