Canelo Alvarez Wants Long Term Promotional Deal With Eddie Hearn
Canelo Alvarez, Boxing’s pound for pound number 1, appears to be set on a future intertwined with promoter Eddie Hearn.
Have parted ways with Golden Boy Promotions in November, Canelo has been working in tandem with Matchroom Boxing ever since. However, Canelo still retains his own promotional licence. This may mean that there would be no long term contract between Alvarez and Hearn. In its place would be a partnership based on one or two fight contracts. Speaking with TV Azteca (translated by Supreme Boxing), Canelo discussed working with Hearn.
“The idea is to continue to work with Eddie Hearn for a very long time. He is the best promoter in the world, by far. I love working with him because he is a promoter who cares about even the little details, which makes everything much better. He never has a problem with his fighters and he listens to the wishes of his fighters. It is great to finally work with this type of promoter. It is true we signed a two-fight deal, for February and May [vs. Avni Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders]. I like this way of working, and Eddie is happy to continue with this too [to work on one and two-flight deals]. (transcribed by Boxing Scene).
Canelo is hoping to fight in September next, with Caleb Plant currently the most likely opponent. He confirmed that Hearn is already contracted to negotiate the fight for him. Alvarez stated the following:
“We have already asked [Hearn] to lead the negotiations for our September fight, possibly against [Caleb] Plant, and he has started the talks with their team.”
Alvarez is also looking to his future, and see’s Hearn as being instrumental to him progressing towards becoming an all time great. He said the following:
“We have discussed the idea of fighting in December too, and in May 2022. Yes, the idea [Reynoso and I] have is to keep working with Eddie for my fights and also with the other fighters on our [Canelo Team — such as Julio Cesar Martinez and Hiroto Kyoguchi] for many years.”
