Canelo Alvarez’s Trainer Says There’s ‘No Chance’ A Fight With Usyk Ever Happens
Although Canelo Alvarez is moving up to light heavyweight, his trainer, Eddy Reynoso says there’s no chance his pupil faces Oleksandr Usyk.
Although Usyk is the current heavyweight champion, he recently said that if Alvarez stayed at cruiserweight, he would go back down to box him.
“Yes, I can fight him at cruiserweight. But with only one thing – I keep my belts at heavyweight,” Usyk said to Boxing Insider. “Then I go back to cruiserweight and fight him and then I come back to heavyweight.”
There is no question a fight between Alvarez and Usyk would be massive. Both men are big stars in the sport, but for Reynoso, he has ruled that fight out.
“No, no way, there is no chance that [Canelo] will fight Usyk. He’s a heavyweight fighter, that’s what we have Frank Sanchez there for and that would be a great fight,” Reynoso told Lester Silva (via BoxingScene).
Canelo Alvarez, of course, is set to face WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu sometime in 2022. For now, however, the focus on Reynoso is having his own heavyweight, Frank Sanchez work his way up to box Usyk.
“We are going to look for a world championship fight in 2022. Frank is ranked at number four in the WBC and within the top five of the other organizations, so we’ll keep working and keep learning,” Reynoso said. Hopefully we get [the world title shot], we are very excited. More than anything the discipline and hunger that Frank has shown in the gym, the learning that he has had, little by little, gives us the guideline to think about that.”
