Canelo Rules Out Demetrius Andrade Fight: ‘He’s Fought Nobody’
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is not interested in fighting Demetrius Andrade.
The Mexican superstar is open to a variety of fights against the likes of Caleb Plant, Jermall Charlo, and David Benavidez but has ruled out taking on Andrade.
Up first, Canelo will take on Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 at AT&T Stadium in Texas.
The WBC, WBA, WBO super middleweight titles will be on the line.
If he is victorious this weekend, Canelo is hoping to face IBF super middleweight champion, Caleb Plant, to try to become undisputed at 168lbs.
“That’s what I want, all of the titles in this division. My first move is Billy Joe Saunders, of course I need to win, and then the next champion is Caleb Plant and that’s the goal,” Canelo told The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer.
Beyond that goal, Canelo expressed an interest in squaring off against Charlo and Benavidez.
“Yes [to Jermall Charlo], why not for the people. Maybe for me it’s hard to make 160 now but lets see for the future,” Canelo said.
“[I would fight Benavidez]. Why not, it would be a great fight with David Benavidez,” Alvarez added. “I just want to make fights people want to see.”
Andrade is a champion and under the Matchroom/DAZN banner meaning it would be an easy fight to make.
Alvarez though, isn’t interested in squaring off against Andrade anytime soon.
“He’s fought nobody yet, you see the record but he’s fighting with nobody. I have other plans,” Canelo said.
This weekend’s fight against Saunders is the last on Canelo’s current deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
The pound-for-pound number one is hoping to work with the British promoter again but is also interested in moving over to PBC to challenge himself against some of the best fighters in and around super middleweight.
“Maybe, why not? It’s my last fight with DAZN, I hope to work with Eddie [Hearn] no matter what but why not [fight on a PBC platform] because I want to fight with all the guys in boxing,” Canelo said. (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)
