Canelo: ‘Ryan Garcia Showed That He Has Balls’
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has showered lightweight star Ryan Garcia with praise after the 22-year-old survived a heavy early knockdown to beat Luke Campbell this past weekend.
Garcia was caught with a big shot in round two and suffered the first knockdown of his career. The youngster was undeterred and continued to put the pressure on his experienced opponent. Garcia clipped Campbell at the end of round five, only for the bell to save the Brit from what could’ve been a fight-ending sequence. In round seven Garcia delivered a picture-perfect body shot that dropped Campbell who was unable to beat the count.
‘Canelo’ who trains with and mentors Garcia was full of praise post fight, he said.
“Ryan Garcia showed that he has balls. That is one of the most important things in boxing,” Alvarez told Little Giant Boxing. “And this fight is going to serve him well. Luke Campbell is a good fighter, left-handed, difficult. This fight is going to serve him more than all the ones he has fought.
The Mexican believes being dropped will be good for Garcia moving forward.
“The key was to be patient, to be calm, but he sped things up,” ‘Canelo’ said. “This fight will serve as an experience for him. In the end, fights like this are the ones that give you the experience to go forward to even bigger fights and everything like this will serve him well.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)
