Carl Frampton Retires After Losing To Jamel Herring By TKO

Carl Frampton called it a career following his loss to Jamel Herring for the WBO junior lightweight bout.

Frampton entered the fight looking to become a three-weight world champion but Herring was too much. In the fifth-round, Herring dropped Frampton and the beatdown continued into the sixth-round which caused Frampton’s corner to throw in the towel.

After the fight, Frampton confirmed his retirement as in the lead-up to the bout he said if he lost he would hang up his gloves.

“I said before I would retire if I lost this fight and that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” an emotional Frampton said in the ring (via BBC). I just want to dedicate my life to my family now. Boxing has been good to me, it’s also been bad to me. The last few years with these boys [trainers Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis], have been the best of my career. I just want to go home to my beautiful wife and kids and that’s it.”

Herring, meanwhile, said he has been Frampton’s fan so it was hard to fight him and send him into retirement.

“It was an emotional rollercoaster just to get here. People doubted me, they called me every name in the book but, even with the cut, I wasn’t going to quit,” Herring said. “Carl Frampton has been a tremendous champion. I have been a fan since day one. It is tough to see any veteran go out like that, I am glad he is able to walk out on his two feet. It has been a great night.”

Carl Frampton retires with a professional record of 28-3 and started his career out 23-0. He was the former WBA (Super) featherweight and IBF-Super bantamweight champion among others. He also holds notable wins over Leo Santa Cruz, and Luke Jackson among others.
