Chris Eubank Jr. Says He Will Retire If Conor Benn Beats Him On Saturday: ‘There’s A Lot Of Pressure On Me To Not Only Win But To Uphold The Name’
Chris Eubank Jr. has upped the stakes for his fight against Conor Benn on Saturday.
Eubank Jr. and Benn are set to fight atop an October 8 DAZN pay-per-view from the O2 Arena in London, England. It’s a massive fight given their dads fought each other as pro boxers twice with Eubank winning once and the other being a draw and now their sons get the chance to fight each other.
Given that Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn were rivals, Chris Eubank Jr. admits there is a ton of pressure on him entering this fight against Conor Benn.
“It’s a huge amount of pressure on me for this fight, absolutely,” Eubank Jr. said during a joint appearance with Benn on Good Morning Britain. “I’ve said it before and it’s the first time I’ve said it throughout my career. If I lose this fight, I retire. I love this sport, I love being a boxer. I don’t want it to end.”
Entering the fight, Chris Eubank Jr. is the betting favorite but he isn’t putting any stock into that. Instead, he knows he still needs to get the win and he has added to the stakes of the fight as he revealed if he loses he will retire from boxing.
“Losing to Conor Benn at this stage of my career means I’m not the fighter I thought I was or that I think I am. I want to challenge for world titles in the next six to twelve months. I can’t do that with a loss to Conor Benn,” Eubank Jr. said. “My father retired at 32. I’m 33 years old. This is an extremely important fight. There’s a lot of pressure on me to not only win but to uphold the name, the family legacy that we’ve created. Right now, the Eubank name is in front of the Benn name in the history books. I’m going to keep it that way.”
