Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall Card Postponed Following The Passing Of Queen Elizabeth II
Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall has been postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The all-women’s card was supposed to take place at the O2 Arena, London on Saturday. However, on Thursday, the queen passed away and it was uncertain if the event would go on as promised, and on Friday it was announced the event was postponed with October 15 as the likely new date.
“With respect to the country I understand that the Queen of the country passing has an entire country mourning,” Claressa Shields said on Twitter. “The government is speaking & those in higher power. Whatever the decision, I’m respectful of it.”
Although Shields was much more compassionate about it, Alycia Baumgardner who was facing Mikaela Mayer on the card took to social media to blast her.
“Your ass whoopin got postponed!” Baumgardner wrote. “Have fun making weight again.”
On Thursday it was reported the Queen was not doing well and it was later announced she passed away. For Ben Shalom, CEO of lead promoter BOXXER, he says out of respect they decided to postpone the event.
“This is an unprecedented moment in our history and our sincere thoughts are primarily with the Royal Family and the nation at this time,” Shalom said. “Out of respect, the British Boxing Board of Control has decided to postpone Saturday’s show. A provisional date for Saturday, 15th October at The O2 is being worked on by all parties to stage this unique and iconic night of celebration for women’s sport at a more appropriate time.”
Along with Shields-Marshall being postponed, Robert Smith, general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control said all UK shows would be postponed.
“The British Boxing Board of Control have decided that all tournaments this weekend will be postponed as a mark of respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We join as a nation in mourning and pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her dedication to our country during her long reign and the legacy she leaves behind.”
