Conor McGregor Can Fight For Boxing World Title If He Beats One Ranked Contender, WBC President Reveals
Conor McGregor is focused on reclaiming his UFC lightweight title, however, the door is open for him to fight for a boxing world title.
McGregor is currently 0-1 as a pro boxer but he has hinted at another boxing bout against Manny Pacquiao. However, those talks have gone silent as of late, but according to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, if the Irishman fights and beats a ranked WBC contender, they will sanction him fighting for a world title.
“I would say, he needs to face and defeat a ranked fighter, then he would be eligible to be ranked and to compete for a title,” Sulaiman told SunSport. “Because, we have plenty of examples of Muay Thai fighters, who turn professional in international boxing, and they are eligible to fight for the title. We also have amateur superstars like Vasiliy Lomachenko, they come into professional boxing and fight for the title and it’s proven it works.”
Conor McGregor is set to make his return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 257 against Dustin Poirier, where he is nearly a three-to-one favorite. If the Irishman wins that, it is likely he will fight for the lightweight title. UFC president, Dana White has also said McGregor is focused and motivated once again and isn’t worried about boxing.
“He’s hitting me up and asking me questions about the layout of the arena, the walk-in, all these types of things that he’s interested in knowing about right now,” White said to ESPN. “He’s all in on this thing.”
For now, it appears his immediate focus is on MMA but perhaps this wrinkle would interest Conor McGregor in making a return to boxing. However, given the WBC put up a belt for his bout with Floyd Mayweather, perhaps he just fights Pacquiao and makes them put up another belt for that fight as well.
