Cris Cyborg Interested In Boxing Katie Taylor
Bellator featherweight champion, Cris Cyborg is set to defend her belt on Thursday night but she is already talking about crossing over to boxing.
Ever since Cyborg signed with Bellator she has talked about wanting to have some boxing fights as well. If she does got into boxing, she already has an opponent in mind in Katie Taylor.
“I like to have challenges. And I really want a boxing fight,” Cyborg told Sky Sports (via boxingscene). “I really like boxing. I’ve tried wrestling, I’ve tried jiu-jitsu, I’ve tried Muay Thai. Always when you compete in a separate sport like this, you learn a lot. I love challenges. I’ve got Arlene Blencowe next in MMA, but if we can do the [Taylor] fight, it will be amazing.”
Katie Taylor is 16-0 as a pro and set to defend her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles on Nov. 14 against Miram Gutierrez. The Irishman is coming off a decision win over Delfine Persoon to defend her belts in June.
Although Cyborg fights in MMA, she says she has focused on boxing as well and knows she would have success there.
“Before I was doing lot of boxing sparring. I was sparring pro boxer Raquel Miller (10-0). I was thinking I was going to do boxing and then we were told it was MMA, so we went back to working on that,” Cyborg said.
“For me it’s easy to separate [the two sports]. I really don’t have to think too much. When I’m boxing I’m focused on boxing and I don’t try to kick an opponent or anything.”
Ultimately, both Cyborg and Taylor need to win their next fights to get the ball rolling on the potential fight. One hurdle, however, would be the weight, which the Brazilian says 147-pounds makes the most sense.
“I walk around at 170 [pounds] and fight at 145. I guess in boxing it would be 147 [welterweight] but I don’t know. She’s calling me out, she’ll have to pick a weight,” Cyborg said.
