Daniel Dubois’ Coach Believes His Fighter Will Become Undisputed Champion
Daniel Dubois’ coach, Don Charles expects his fighter to eventually become the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Dubois is coming off the biggest win of his career as he knocked out Anthony Joshua in a solid performance. Charles says it was the greatest moment of his career and he knows after the win, that Dubois has all the skills to be a champ.
“By far – it has to be,” Charles said to BoxingScene. “It’s like going to the World Cup. There’s only one World Cup so nothing else is going to better that. My aim is to replicate that; go a couple of steps further. Daniel Dubois will be an undisputed world champion. I’m always saying the word God. The word universe. I was right. God exists and the universe is great.”
Although Dubois may have to rematch next, the hope for Charles is for his fighter to face the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs Tyson Fury 2. It’s an intriguing matchup and Charles believes Dubois has the tools to hand Usyk his first career loss.
“I would say he’s very equipped,” Charles replies, smiling this time. “Our working relationship – that was our first fight and we had 15 weeks preparing for it, and we’ve now been together for 14 months, so there’s going to be a lot of difference. The understanding is there and he’s already been in there with Usyk. He knows he can hurt Usyk, and definitely we would relish that opportunity to right that wrong – the fighter and the coaching staff.”
However, Don Charles thinks Daniel Dubois will remain on the sidelines for a bit to see how the heavyweight division plays out.
“Probably 2025,” Charles says, of when Dubois might return. “The kid’s been really active; probably the most active heavyweight in the world in the last 12 months. Four fights, Usyk, Baby Miller, Hrgovic, AJ… If someone said to me when I started training Daniel, that is the run you’re going to have, that is a daunting run, isn’t it? And he’s stopped everybody, including Usyk.”
Daniel Dubois is 22-2 as a pro and coming off the win over Joshua. Before that, he knocked out Filip Hrgovic.
