Daniel Dubois Says He Was Cheated Out Of World Title
Daniel Dubois believes he was cheated out of a world title on Saturday night in Poland.
Dubois was facing Oleksandr Uysk for the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO, and The Ring heavyweight titles. In the fifth round, Dubois landed a body shot that dropped Usyk, but it was ruled low. On replay, it looked clean but the ref had ruled it low and Usyk had over three minutes to recover.
Daniel Dubois says he spent a lot of time in training camp working on that body shot and felt like it was indeed clean. However, the ref ruled it low and Usyk eventually went on to win by ninth-round stoppage.
Now, following the loss, Dubois believes he was cheated out of a win and should be the heavyweight champion right now.
“This wrong needs to be corrected. This needs to go further, it needs to be pushed,” Dubois told BBC Sport. “I should be a world champion right now. It wasn’t justice. It needs to be called out and go further than living this lie. They just cheated out there. I definitely want a rematch – get justice, get a rematch, get something to happen. We’ve been working in the gym for weeks and weeks on end on that shot. We pulled it off and that should have been our moment. That should have been a knockout. I’m feeling gutted. It wasn’t a low blow. I felt it land perfectly, smack into his stomach. I know for sure when I land a good shot.”
Daniel Dubois’ promoter in Frank Warren has also said the plan is to appeal the decision and hopefully turn it into a No Contest and get a rematch.
However, the result is still frustrating as Dubois believes he should be the heavyweight champion right now.
