Daniel Dubois Wants A ‘Step-Up’ in Competiton, Eyes Chisora Or Whyte Next
Daniel Dubois is hoping for a step-up in competition next time out.
Dubois is 18-1 and coming off a KO win over Trevor Bryan to win the WBA (regular) heavyweight title. Although a rematch with Joe Joyce could make sense as the titles are held up right now, he says he’d rather face Derek Chisora or Dillian Whyte.
“I want to fight a step-up, a real fight,” Dubois told iD Boxing’s Rob Tebbutt (h/t BoxingScene). “Someone like [Derek] Chisora or Dillian Whyte. These are the guys I need to fight next, in the next step in my career. These are the guys that will give me a battle, test my chin out. I want to give the fans excitement. Settle a few things out and get it on.”
Whyte is coming off the KO loss to Tyson Fury and has said he wants to eventually work his way up to the rematch. Perhaps beating Dubois is a way to get that while Chisora snapped his three-fight skid with a controversial decision win over Kubrat Pulev.
According to Daniel Dubois, he believes if he can beat Whyte or Chisora he would prove just how good he is and can start getting in the conversation to face Fury, Joshua, or Usyk.
“Once I get through guys like Dillian Whyte and those guys, those are the fights that will get me ready for the rematch with Joe,” insists Dubois, who is expected to return to the ring this fall. “I need to be riding high on confidence and belief. He’s no slouch, he’s a top fighter. I need to raise my game, raise my confidence. I’m heading in the right direction.”
