Danny Garcia Says Being Away For Two Years Was Good For Him
Danny Garcia says having two years away was good for him as he’s set to return on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga undercard against Erislandy Lara.
Garcia has not boxed since July 2022 when he beat Jose Benavidez Jr., but despite being away for more than two years. Despite the layoff, Garcia says he’s expecting to be the same Garcia in his return.
“You can expect the same Danny Garcia,” Garcia said recently said. “I really feel like nothing’s really changed. If anything, the two-year layoff helped me. My body feels recovered. I don’t have no injuries. My mind feels good. My body feels good. I feel rejuvenated. I feel like I haven’t lost a step. I’m in here sparring with the young guys, veterans. I was sparring with Devon Alexander. I was sparring with Antonio Tarver’s son. I’m feeling good.”
Heading into the bout, Danny Garcia says it was tough to get a fight done, but is glad Lara stepped up. However, the weight has been an issue, but it has been agreed to for 157lbs.
“Lara came into the conversation when I was speaking to my team,” Garcia said. “I said, ‘Look, let me get this Benavidez fight to test the water at 154,’ and then I think Lara agreed to fight me at 155, but two years went past. The fight was agreed to. It just took time because, I think, the Showtime thing. The fight is [now] agreed to at 157, catchweight, but there’s no rehydration clause.”
Danny Garcia has the chance to win another belt on Sept. 14 and he says becoming a champ is part of his goal.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to be a three-division world champion,” Garcia said. “And it’s right here, three-and-a-half weeks away.”
Garcia is 37-3 as a pro and has held multiple world championships in two weight classes.
