Deontay Wilder opens as betting favorite to defeat Anthony Joshua in potential boxing showdown
Former WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder may have been sidelined from active competition since October of last year, however, the heavyweight knockout ace has still opened as a significant betting favorite to defeat former two-time world champion and recent big-winner, Anthony Joshua, if the two share the ring in the future.
Wilder, a former WBC heavyweight champion, has been sidelined since he headlined an October pay-per-view event in Brooklyn, New York, stopping common-foe, Robert Helenius with a staggering opening round knockout win at the Barclays Center.
And as for Joshua, the Watford native, whom himself shared the ring most recently with short-notice replacement, Helenius last month – stopped the Finnish heavyweight in a reworked clash in London, England, felling the latter with a massive seventh round KO triumph.
In the immediate aftermath of his victory, Joshua had been linked with a long-awaited title-eliminator with Alabama native, Wilder, however, the Watford puncher is up against the odds on a huge array of markets if he shares the squared circle with the former WBC gold holder.
And as mentioned, a host of websites, bookies, and markets are taking wagers and bets – both prop and outright winner on a potential fight between Wilder and Joshua, including punters.pub.
Making his boxing return in his first round blitzing of Helenius back in October of last year, Wilder had succumbed to knockout losses to incumbent WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury in back-to-back title rematch and subseqeunt rubber match outings in 2020, and 2021, respectively.
Coming as just the two defeats in the monstrous knockout artist’s professional boxing career, Wilder chalked up his staggering forty second knockout win from forty three total career victories in his October stoppage of Helenius of last year.
And striking WBC heavyweight gold in a unanimous decision win over Bermane Stiverne, Wilder would go on to defend the belt on 10 separate, consecutive occasions in outings against Eric Molina, Johann Duhaupas, Artur Szpilka, Chris Arreola, Gerald Washington, Stiverne, Luis Ortiz, Fury, and Dominic Breazeale.
Himself rebounding from back-to-back defeats in his knockout win over Helenius and a prior decision win over Jermaine Franklin earlier this year, Joshua managed to land his first victory via knockout since a 2020 KO of Kubrat Pulev, having dropped his titles to Ukrainian favorite, Oleksandr Usyk.
Failing to ever clinch WBC heavyweight gold, Joshua has enjoyed a stunning, gold-laden professional career since turning professional, defeating Wladimir Klitchscko with an eleventh round knockout in 2017, adding IBO and WBA spoils to his already held IBF heavyweight championship.
Himself revered for his knockout ability on occasion, Joshua, whom may not hold the one-punch stopping power of Alabama KO kingpin, Wilder, has racked up notable stoppages over names including Dillian Whyte, Charles Martin, Dominic Breazeale, Eric Molina, Carlos Takam, Alexander Povetkin, and the above-mentioned Pulev in high-profile championship fights.
Forever linked to share a blockbuster heavyweight card alongside the above-mentioned championships holders, Fury, and Usyk in the future – if Wilder and Joshua officially book a monstrous heavyweight clash, the former will open as a distinct betting favorite to defeat the British fighter.
