Deontay Wilder Wasn’t Surprised ‘At All’ By Anthony Joshua’s Defeat To Oleksandr Usyk
Deontay Wilder was not surprised by recent changes in the heavyweight title picture.
Anthony Joshua lost his heavyweight titles last month after getting outclassed by Oleksandr Usyk over 12 rounds to lose a unanimous decision.
That was despite many in the boxing world as well as oddsmakers pegging him as the favorite to come out on top and face the winner of Wilder’s trilogy fight with Tyson Fury this week for the WBC heavyweight crown.
With Joshua set to face Usyk in a rematch at some point, it’s very possible that should Wilder come out on top against Fury, he won’t be facing Joshua in a potential title unification clash.
But that likely won’t be anything new for Wilder, especially as he wasn’t surprised at all by Usyk coming out on top.
In fact, he’s expecting an even more emphatic result for Usyk in the rematch (via Michael Benson).
“I wasn’t [surprised] at all, I wasn’t at all… Styles make fights and, with Joshua, he just had his number. I think he’s gonna have his number even more so the second time around.”
As for Wilder, he’ll be looking to not only become a two-time heavyweight champion, but also exact revenge on Fury in their upcoming trilogy fight.
And while not many are giving him much of a chance, it’s hard to completely write him off given his detonator of a right hand.
“When you have devastating power, you’re always gonna be the leader of the pack. Some say, ‘Skills, skills,’ but that’s a broken record. We’ve seen many guys with skills and they’ve still lost. You have power, you’re never out of a fight,” Wilder added.
It’s all set to go down Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
