Devin Haney Expected To Fight Jorge Linares In May
Devin Haney will defend his WBC lightweight belt against Jorge Linares in May according to reports.
Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated broke the story, and it’s been confirmed by Haney on social media saying Bob Arum wouldn’t give him Vasyl Lomachenko.
Although fans will get the chance to see Devin Haney back in action soon, many are disappointed it won’t be against Teofimo Lopez or Lomachenko. Many had hopes Haney would face Lopez while Ryan Garcia would fight Tank Davis and the winners would fight for all the lightweight titles. However, for Haney, he doesn’t believe he needs to fight Lopez to become a star.
“Lopez said I have to fight Rolly [Rolando Romero] to get him when I don’t need Teofimo to become a star. Teofimo is not someone that I need. I still make more money than fighting Teofimo Lopez. For him to say that I have to go through Rolly to get to you is ridiculous. I don’t really need you, Teofimo,” Haney told Behind The Gloves (via boxingscene). “My main focus is to keep winning and collect all of the belts in my division. Fame will come, the money will come in good time. I want belts more than anything.”
Devin Haney is currently 25-0 and coming off a decision win over Yuriokis Gamboa in November of 2020. Before that, he beat Alfredo Santiago by decision on the KSI vs. Logan Paul 2 undercard, in what was supposed to be a breakout performance for Haney but it was far from that.
Jorge Linares, meanwhile, is 47-5 as a pro and will no doubt be Haney’s toughest test to date. He’s riding a two-fight winning streak and is the former WBC, WBA, and The Ring lightweight champion. He also holds notable wins over Luke Campbell, and Anthony Crolla but lost his belts to Lomachenko.
Who do you think will win, Devin Haney or Jorge Linares?
