Devin Haney & Luke Campbell Expected To Clash This Summer
WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney is expected to defend his title against Olympic gold medallist Luke Campbell in August or September according to Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing who promotes both fighters.
In an interview with Boxing Scene Hearn said he will ideally match Haney with Ryan Garcia but admitted that fight may take some time to make. So, in the meantime, he’ll look to match the 21-year-old with Campbell who has twice fallen short in world title bids against Jorge Linares and Vasily Lomachencko.
“”Ideally I want to make Davin Haney against Ryan Garcia,” Hearn said. “I think that is a monstrous fight. But that might take a bit longer to be made, so if we can make Haney against Luke Campbell, that is a great fight.”
An injury to Haney meant Campbell was originally supposed to fight Javier Fortuna for the WBC title. However, the fight is yet to be made because of the ongoing global pandemic, meaning Haney is back fully fit and reinstated as WBC champion. Campbell was expected to still face Fortuna for the interim WBC belt and a mandatory shot at Haney, but Hearn says they may just skip that fight and go straight into the big one, he said.
“It’s a bit of a mess, really. Luke has been ordered to fight Javier Fortuna for the world title, now the interim world title, but because of the delay, Devin Haney is back and ready to go. I’d rather they fight each other. Luke seems up for it, Devin Haney seems up for it and that is a fight I will try and make for August or September. Luke is fit as a fiddle. He wants to go back in a big fight. Devin Haney will be one of the first guys back on the US side.”
