Eddie Hearn Confirms Canelo Alvarez Wants Dmitry Bivol Rematch After Defeating Gennady Golovkin
Eddie Hearn has made it clear Canelo Alvarez wants to rematch Dmitry Bivol so he can avenge his loss.
Alvarez suffered a decision loss to Bivol in May in a stunning upset as the size and weight played a bigger role than many expected. Following the loss, the Mexican made it clear he wanted the rematch but had already agreed to the trilogy bout against Gennady Golovkin.
On Saturday night, they had their trilogy match with Alvarez winning a one-sided decision and after the win, the Mexican said he would be going for wrist surgery. Once he is healthy, his promoter in Eddie Hearn says Alvarez wants to run it back with Bivol.
“Dmitry Bivol is the target. Obviously, he’ll want to avenge that defeat, but Bivol has a very tough fight against Zurdo Ramirez on November 5th. We’ll have to see if he gets through that, but I think for Canelo Alvarez, that’ll always be in the back of his mind to see if he can avenge that defeat,” Hearn said (h/t BoxingScene). “I don’t think that Canelo Alvarez is looking at 175 as a division that he wants to necessarily go back to and win belts, but he wants Zurdo Ramirez to beat Bivol for Mexico, but he also wants Bivol to win so he can get a chance to rematch him.
“Don’t rule out the possibility of Bivol moving down to 168 to challenge for the undisputed title because he wants to do that as well,” Hearn continued. “We have to see, but November 5th in Abu Dhabi is a very important date for the diary in the division.”
In order for the rematch to happen, Bivol will need to beat Ramirez, but as Hearn says, it isn’t out of the question that the Russian drops down in weight to challenge for Alvarez’s titles.
