Eddie Hearn Pushing To Make Dmitry Bivol vs. Canelo Alvarez Rematch Following The Russian’s Win
Eddie Hearn is hoping to make Dmitry Bivol vs. Canelo Alvarez 2.
Bivol picked up another win on the weekend in Abu Dhabi as he beat Gilberto Ramirez by decision in a dominant fight. After the win, many expect him to face Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light heavyweight championship.
Yet, with Beterbiev likely to face Anthony Yarde in the first quarter of 2023 and then having Ramadan, Hearn thinks Beterbiev wouldn’t be ready to fight until the summer or fall. With that, he’s hoping to book Bivol vs. Alvarez 2. Of course, the two fought last May with Bivol winning a decision, which was an upset at the time.
“It’s pretty obvious that Dmitry Bivol is about legacy and about belts,” Hearn said during the post-fight press conference (h/t BoxingScene). “And he wants to become undisputed. That is his absolute main focus. Obviously from my side we want to make the biggest fights possible. The Canelo Alvarez rematch is a very big fight. But the priority for Dmitry is to be undisputed. However, if Beterbiev fights Yarde in January or February, and then goes into Ramadan, then he probably wouldn’t be ready to fight Dmitry until June, July or whatever.”
Although Eddie Hearn wants to make this fight in the early parts of 2023, Canelo Alvarez underwent wrist surgery and said he won’t return until September. If that is the case, then Bivol may indeed wait for Beterbiev.
However, both Alvarez and Bivol have said they are open to the rematch happening, with Alvarez being more persistent on it. With that, it does seem likely the two will fight again, whether or not it will be in 2023 is uncertain at this time.
