Eddie Hearn Says Billy Joe Saunders Return Being Discussed For September
Billy Joe Saunders could be making the walk to the ring again this year.
Saunders hasn’t fought since May of 2021 when he suffered a stoppage loss to Canelo Alvarez for the first loss of his career. Since then, there was talk he would retire, as he hinted at both retirement and coming back.
However, no date or opponent has ever been finalized for Billy Joe Saunders’ return. But, Eddie Hearn recently came out and says he thinks Saunders will return in December at 175 and then get a big fight back at 168 next year.
“I liked what I heard from Billy. The reality about Billy Joe Saunders is he’s been a pain in the ass to me at times, I also feel like we’ve done a great job for him, I think he respects that,” Hearn told IFL TV. “When I sit down with him I realize what an asset he can be to British boxing when he’s not misbehaving. I think he may return in December. I think a fight up at 175-pounds could be an option, and then down to 168-pounds for a big fight in the Spring, and that’s what we discussed.”
It would seem likely that Billy Joe Saunders’ return fight would be a tuneup to get him back into he win column and to shake off any ring rust. But, no opponent was mentioned by Eddie Hearn so perhaps that isn’t the case.
As a pro, Billy Joe Saunders is 30-1 and is the former WBO super middleweight and WBO middleweight champion. In his career, Saunders holds notable wins over Chris Eubank Jr., David Lemieux, John Ryder, and Martin Murray among others.
