Eddie Hearn Says Canelo Alvarez Wants Dmitry Bivol Rematch After Gennady Golovkin Trilogy
Eddie Hearn says Canelo Alvarez is focused on getting the Dmitry Bivol rematch after the Gennady Golovkin trilogy.
Back in May, Alvarez suffered a decision loss to Bivol as he moved up to the light heavyweight division to challenge for the WBA title. After the loss, many thought an immediate rematch would be next but Alvarez decided to do the trilogy with Golovkin and after that, Hearn says the Mexican wants the rematch.
“Why do you want to criticize a guy — of course, out of jealousy and the fact that they fell out, there’s a lot of that — but why do you want to criticize a guy for trying to be great? You’re basically saying, ‘You shouldn’t have taken that fight because it was too difficult.’ What sort of sport do we live in where we’re criticizing fighters for taking a big challenge?,” Hearn told The MMA Hour.
“He’s beaten everyone at middleweight. He’s beaten everyone at super middleweight. He wants to do something different, he wants to test himself. All of a sudden you get beat and, ‘It’s a terrible mistake. You shouldn’t have done it,” Hearn continued. “You should have taken an easier fight in your weight division.’ Boring. This is a guy who has done it all and we should respect him for trying to be great. Now he comes back, fights GGG, he wants to go straight back into the Bivol rematch. If he beats Bivol in the rematch, what do we say then? Greatest fighter of all time, one of.”
In order to get the rematch, Canelo Alvarez will need to beat GGG in an intriguing matchup on September 17. Should he win, then the Dmitry Bivol rematch will be even bigger than the first bout.
