Eddie Hearn Targeting George Kambosos Jr. vs. Devin Haney For June
According to Eddie Hearn, George Kambosos Jr. could be set to face Devin Haney next.
Kambosos is looking to compete in his home country of Australia for the first defense of his WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight titles.
Initially, it appeared he would face former champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. However, with Lomachenko currently in his home country of Ukraine amid the Russia invasion, that no longer appears to be the plan.
And so, in stepped Hearn and WBC lightweight champion Haney.
They previously had negotiation issues with Kambosos and his promoter Lou DiBella. However, it appears compromises are now being made.
As things stand, Hearn revealed they are trying to close a deal for a June 4 fight.
“June 4th is the proposed date,” Hearn said (via Michael Benson). “We’re trying to close that deal at the moment. DAZN are talking to us and to Lou DiBella, hopefully we can get it agreed and announced in due course.”
If booked, the winner of the fight would be the true undisputed and unified lightweight champion.
While Lomachenko is a bigger name than Haney, that’s certainly a great consolation prize for Kambosos.
