Eddie Hearn Thinks Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol Will Be Catchweight Fight If It Happens Next Month
If Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol does happen next month, it will likely be a catchweight fight.
That’s according to Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn who was commenting on the possibility of Alvarez’s next fight.
Alvarez was expected to face Caleb Plant in a super middleweight title unification clash on September 18 in Las Vegas. That was until negotiations broke off later on.
The Mexican superstar could try to resume talks with Plant in the future or fight another opponent on that September date.
Hearn previously stated that light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol was the front runner to face Alvarez in a fight that would see the latter move up and challenge for the 175-pound title.
That could still happen. However, Hearn believes it would be a title fight at a catchweight (via Michael Benson).
“Eddie Hearn has revealed that he thinks Canelo Alvarez vs Dmitry Bivol will take place at a catchweight, if it gets done for Sept 18th. Would make fight between 168lbs-175lbs while still for Bivol’s WBA light-heavyweight title.”
Given the short notice, a catchweight would probably work best for Bivol. But again, that’s if the fight really does happen.
