Errol Spence Jr. Expects To Remain Active With ‘Busy’ 2021
Errol Spence Jr. is looking to be active in 2021.
Spence enjoyed a successful return to the ring this past weekend as he comfortably outpointed Danny Garcia over 12 rounds to retain his WBC and IBF welterweight titles.
It was notably his first outing since his horrific car accident earlier this year with many wondering how that would affect his performance in the ring.
However, it didn’t seem to affect him much at all as Spence enjoyed more domination against Garcia than his much closer contest with Shawn Porter last September that resulted in a split decision victory.
“The Truth” owes that to following instructions from his trainer Derrick James this time.
“They told me to use my jabs and my boxing skills against Shawn, but I made the hype get to me, and went toe-to-toe with him most of the way,” Spence told The Gleaner (via Boxing Scene). “I ended up with a split decision and on reflection, I see where I could have thrown that fight away.
“Saturday I listened to them, and won comfortably.”
The win concluded what was a trying year for Spence but now, he’s focused on his goal of unifying the welterweight division. Remaining active in the new year will certainly help contribute to that goal.
“When I heard the ring announcer say, ‘the winner and still champion’, the feeling of joy that I felt was even more satisfying than when I was declared champion for the first time back in May 2017,” Spence added. “I am back and 2021 will be a busy year.”
As far as Spence’s father is concerned, he wants to see his son box three times in 2021.
“We would like to have about three fights next year,” Spence Sr. stated.
Hopefully, one of those fights comes against WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford.
Do you think we’ll see Spence face Crawford next year?
