Floyd Mayweather Believes David Benavidez Would Be A Good Test For Canelo Alvarez
Floyd Mayweather, the only man to defeat Canelo Alvarez, likes the idea of the Mexican boxing David Benavidez.
After Alvarez knocked out Caleb Plant and Benavidez beat Kyrone Davis, many called for the fight to happen. Yet, Alvarez appears set to move up to cruiserweight, but for Mayweather, he hopes to see the two fighters meet in the very near future.
“We like Canelo Alvarez, but Gervonta Davis, Errol Spence, Terence Crawford – there are so many other great fighters out there. David Benavidez is a helluva fighter also; that’s a good test for Canelo,” Mayweather said, according to The Sun (via Boxingscene). “Canelo looked superb the other night. He went out there, and he went out there, and he done his job and did what he’s supposed to do as afighter. “We had a chance to clash [in 2013], two undefeated fighters, and we gave people what they wanted to see.”
Benavidez has also been vocal about wanting Alvarez and saying he is the only person to pose problems for him.
“I think everybody wants to see me against Canelo. I’ll go through anybody; whoever they want me to go through.”
“That was a great performance on my end,” he added.
“A lot of courage by Kyrone, too, man. I respect him a lot, him and his team. Tough dude and he came out here to give the fans a good fight, too. So, we both left it all out in the ring today, so thank you everybody.”
Although Floyd Mayweather wants the fight, it’s unlikely it will happen, at least next. Canelo Alvarez is linked to a May fight with WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu. David Benavidez, meanwhile, was ordered to face David Lemiuex – with the WBC’s interim-super middleweight title at stake in the first quarter of 2022. Should both men win, perhaps Alvarez-Benavidez happens next.
