Floyd Mayweather Responds After People Claim Canelo Alvarez Would’ve Beaten Him In His Prime
Floyd Mayweather has responded to fans after many claim Canelo Alvarez would’ve beaten him in his prime.
Mayweather and Alvarez met in 2013 with Mayweather winning a majority decision. It was a competitive fight, but at the time, the Mexican was nowhere near the level he is at today. Yet, according to Mayweather, he believes when they fought, he was out of his prime and it was Alvarez who was in it.
“It’s crazy that he said that because when Canelo fought me, he was in his prime and when I fought [him], I was an old man,” said Mayweather reacting to Canelo saying that he’d have beaten Floyd in 2013 if he was in his prime like he is now (via Boxingnews24).
Although that is what Floyd Mayweather thinks, he was 36-years-old and was still fighting at an elite level. Alvarez, meanwhile, was 23 and not even in his prime. There is no doubt Mayweather got him early, but the undefeated boxer still thinks the Mexican was closer to his prime than he was. He also says it will be the same for his upcoming match against Logan Paul on June 6.
“Actually, I wasn’t in my prime when I fought Canelo. I was an old man when I fought Canelo just like right here [with the Logan Paul fight],” Mayweather added. “A young guy but I’ve got a lot of experience. I’m going to go out there and show him this is the elite level and it’s something totally different.”
Mayweather, as mentioned, is set to return for an exhibition bout against Logan Paul on June 6 in Miami.
Canelo Alvarez is coming off a TKO win over Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday night. The goal for the Mexican is to fight Caleb Plant next time out to unify the 168-pound division.
Do you think Canelo Alvarez would’ve beaten Floyd Mayweather if they fought a few years later?
