Former Undisputed Middleweight Champ Marvin Hagler Dies At 66
Marvin Hagler, the former undisputed middleweight champion, and one of the best boxers ever has past away at age 66.
His wife took to his social media to reveal the heartbreaking news. The news caught the boxing world by storm as the death was unexpected for the healthy 66-year-old.
“I am sorry to make a very sad announcement,” his wife Kay G. Hagler wrote Hagler’s official Facebook fan page. “Today unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire. Our family requests that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”
Marvin Hagler had his last pro fight in April of 1987 where he lost by split decision to Sugar Ray Leonard to lose his WBC and The Ring middleweight titles. He ended his career with a record of 62-3-2 and is hands down one of the best boxers of all-time.
In his legendary career, Hagler picked up notable wins over Thomas Hearns, John Mugabi, Roberto Duran, and Alan Minter among countless others. He had 12 title defenses and reigned over the middleweight division from 1980 to 1987. He also holds the highest KO percentage of all undisputed middleweight champions, at 78 percent.
After the news of his passing became public, several boxing icons tweeted out their thoughts on Hagler.
His former promoter in Bob Arum had glowing reviews for the late, great Marvin Hagler. He was easy to work with, and a man of his word, Arum said in a brief statement.
“Marvin Hagler was among the greatest athletes that Top Rank ever promoted,” Bob Arum said to TMZ. “He was a man of honor and a man of his word, and he performed in the ring with unparalleled determination. He was a true athlete and a true man. I will miss him greatly.”
