Gennadiy Golovkin Believes He Won Both Canelo Alvarez Fights
Gennadiy Golovkin remains soured by the results of his Canelo Alvarez fights.
Golovkin fought Alvarez in two back-and-forth middleweight title bouts for the ages in September 2017 and September 2018.
Many felt Golovkin did more than enough to win the first fight. However, it ended up being scored a split decision draw with Adalaide Byrd giving Alvarez a disgraceful 118-110 scorecard.
The pair would rematch one year later in a much closer contest. It could have gone either way as fans had it for Golovkin or Alvarez while others scored it as a draw.
In the end, Alvarez earned the nod and won the unanimous decision to hand Golovkin his first professional defeat.
Over three years on, “GGG” still believes he won both fights and that anyone who says otherwise is delusional.
“I have the opinion that I won both fights,” Golovkin said (via Michael Benson). “But some people are comfortable being delusional. Whether it soured me a bit? Yes.
“To see people were able to get away with this fraud, you think, ‘Really? This is how it works?'”
Golovkin could be set for a third fight with Alvarez as the latter is closing in on a two-fight deal with Eddie Hearn that would see him fight Dmitry Bivol first.
Whether Golovkin can come out on top remains to be seen — especially as he is much older now and will turn 40 in April.
But it will certainly be a fight everyone in the combat sports world would still watch.
