George Kambosos Jr. Believes He Clearly Beat Maxi Hughes
George Kambosos Jr. doesn’t think his fight against Maxi Hughes was as close as people think.
Kambosos Jr. fought Hughes on Saturday night FireLake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma and he won a majority decision to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF belt.
It was a back-and-forth fight as both men had moments in there but it was Kambosos Jr. winning a majority decision with scores of 114-114, 117-111, and 115-113.
“We won the fight by many rounds. That’s no discredit to Maxi Hughes. He had a couple good rounds. But a couple good rounds don’t win you the fight. We won a majority of the rounds. That’s the reason we chose him. He was a hard test. A lot of guys coming off losses wouldn’t want to take a test like him. This was a hard challenge,” Kambosos Jr. said after the win. “I need to get grittier. He was moving a lot and wasn’t engaging a lot, but that’s the way he fights. We knew he was going to be a tough challenge, but styles make fights. I’ve got to be more gritty with these guys.”
The win over Maxi Hughes snapped George Kambosos Jr.’s two-fight losing skid as he dropped back-to-back fights to Devin Haney to lose his undisputed lightweight titles. Prior to the losses to Haney, Kambosos Jr. scored an upset win over Teofimo Lopez to become the undisputed champ.
Although it was a close fight, Kambosos Jr. was confident he did enough to get the win. However, the judges saw it much closer than the Aussie thought it was.
