George Kambosos Jr. Says Devin Haney Isn’t An Elite Boxer And Will Find Out The Hard Way
George Kambosos Jr. doesn’t think Devin Haney is an elite boxer.
Kambosos Jr., the current undefeated and unified lightweight champion, is set to defend his belt against Haney in Melbourne, Australia on June 5. He was supposed to fight Vasyl Lomachenko but Lomachenko withdrew as he stayed home to defend Ukraine. With that, Haney stepped up and although it is an intriguing matchup, Kambosos Jr. doesn’t think Haney is an elite boxer.
“Look, I’ve been a contender on the rise for a long time before I won these titles,” Kambosos Jr. said (via Boxingscene). “So, I’ve been looking at all these guys. I’ve got notes on all these guys. I know how to beat all these guys and I will continue to beat all of them – one by one, round by round, one by one. So, look, I’m not gonna disrespect Devin Haney. He’s a good boxer. But he ain’t elite, and he will find that out the hard way.”
Kambosos Jr. is coming off the upset win over Teofimo Lopez to become the champ. It was a solid performance from Kambosos Jr. and now that he is fighting Haney, he believes it will be another victory for him that will solidify himself as the best.
“They call him ‘The Dream,’ but now that it’s signed, reality’s gonna kick in,” Kambosos said. “Day by day, that reality is gonna set in stone. You’re gonna see it – this stadium, this fighter you’ve got in front of you – this ain’t no game.”
George Kambosos Jr. is 20-0 as a pro and before the win over Lopez, he defeated Lee Selby by split decision and Mickey Bey by split decision.
