George Kambosos Sends A Message To Haney, Lomachenko, Davis, And Garcia
George Kambosos has sent a message to the top of the lightweight division after defeating Teofimo Lopez in a stunning upset.
Entering the fight with Lopez, not many gave Kambosos a shot but he dropped Lopez early in the first and controlled the bout to earn a hard-fought decision. It was a great performance from the Australian and he said what made it more difficult was fighting Lopez in his hometown.
“As much as I had to go do it inside the ropes, my family and my friends and both my countries lifted me, especially in that round 10,” Kambosos said to Fox Sports AU (via Boxingscene). “It’s a big moment for everyone that’s been around me, a big moment for Australia. This is huge. I had to go and really earn it. I had to go to the backyard [of my opponents] multiple times and to go and beat this guy in his prime and in his home town, no Australian fighter’s ever done that before. So these belts mean a lot and they mean a lot to the whole of our country.”
Now that Kambosos is the IBF, WBA, WBC Franchise, WBO lightweight champion, he has his eyes set on four opponents for his next fight. That is Devin Haney, Vasyl Lomachenko, Tank Davis, and Ryan Garcia, and all four would be massive fights.
Not only does he want to fight one of the four big names at lightweight, but he wants it to happen in Australia. It would likely be able to sell out a stadium, and now that Kambosos is the champion, he does have some say as to where the fight will take place.
“We’re bringing the big fights here now. I deserve it, I’ve earned that,” Kambosos said. I haven’t fought here since 2017 so a big fight (is coming) and we’re going to bring that to a massive stadium – 80,000 people. Haney, Davis, Lomachenko, Garcia, they’re all going to get it.”
