Gervonta Davis Says He’s ‘Not Overlooking’ Luis Garcia, Knows How Dangerous He Is
Gervonta Davis has made it clear, he isn’t overlooking Luis Garcia, as many are calling it a tune-up fight due to Davis already agreeing to fight Ryan Garcia next.
Davis and Garcia are set to meet on Jan. 7 as they headline a Showtime pay-per-view event at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. Although Davis already has his next fight booked afterward, he says he can’t overlook Garcia, as he knows Garcia can KO anyone.
“I’m definitely not sleeping on him or overlooking him. You saw what he did against Colbert,” Davis said in a Twitter Spaces conversation hosted by @LazyLeftyOG (via BoxingScene). “I know that he’s technical. He’s got a little pop. I just want to put on a great performance. I’m going back and watching tape and studying him. I’m not a guy who overlooks my opponent just because social media says someone is trash or anything like that. I don’t think he’s trash.”
Davis is a sizeable favorite and many expect him to run through Garcia to set up the fight with Ryan Garcia next. However, he says it is boxing and anything can happen and anyone can get knocked out, so he is preparing for a tough fight.
Gervonta Davis (27-0) is coming off a TKO win over Rolly Romero, and before that, he beat Isaac Cruz by decision. Should he get past Garcia and defend his WBA lightweight title he will face Ryan Garcia on April 15, 2023, in Las Vegas. In his career, he holds notable wins over Mario Barrios, Leo Santa Cruz, and Yuriorkis Gamboa.
Luis Garcia (16-0 and three No Contests) is coming off a decision win over Roger Gutierrez back in August and before that, he beat Chris Colbert to hand him his first pro loss.
