Gervonta Davis vs. Leo Santa Cruz PPV Set For October 24
Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz finally have a date and venue for their eagerly anticipated 130lb title fight.
Mike Coppinger of The Athletic broke news of the fight last night. He also revealed belts in two different divisions will be on the line.
“Breaking: Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz will meet Oct. 24 on Showtime Pay-Per-View, sources tell @TheAthleticBOX. The event, along with seven other Showtime cards, will be announced tomorrow. All eight shows at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.” Coppinger wrote on social media.
“Gervonta-LSC is being contested at 130 pounds, but both Santa Cruz’s junior lightweight title and Davis’ secondary lightweight title will be on the line. The 1988 matchup between Sugar Ray Leonard and Donny Lalonde was for the WBC’s 168-and 175-pound titles,” Coppinger wrote on social media.
Showtime followed up that report with an official announcement this morning. They confirmed the pair will meet on October 24 in a pay-per-view main event at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. As of yet no undercard bouts have been announced for the card. Showtime did announce its full boxing schedule which will see nine events take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena from August 1 to December 12. Fans will not be permitted at any of the events taking place until the end of the year due to the ongoing pandemic.
Last time out we saw Davis continue his rise to superstardom by claiming a 12th round stoppage win against Yuriorkis Gamboa. ‘Tank’ pushed his unbeaten record to 23-0, with 22 knockouts in his lightweight debut.
Santa Cruz will be fighting at the 130lb limit for just the second time in his career. The former featherweight, junior featherweight and bantamweight champion scored a unanimous decision win over Miguel Flores (24-3, 12 KOs) in November 2019.
Who wins on October 24? Gervonta Davis or Leo Santa Cruz?
